Growth Form: Short, delicate annuals.

Stems: Culms (stems) slender, glabrous.

Roots: Fibrous root system.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate, distichous. Blades linear, flat or folded lengthwise. Surfaces glabrous. Margins entire. Veins parallel. Sheaths glabrous, smooth or somewhat scabrous; ligule membranous, glabrous, lower surface somewhat scabrous. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescences paniculate, small, open or contracted. Spikelets 2–flowered, small, not compressed, both florets bisexual (perfect), rachilla glabrous, disarticulating above the glumes, short between the florets, minutely prolonged beyond upper floret; glumes delicately membranous to subscarious, glabrous, 1–nerved, acute lemmas lanceolate, shorter than the glumes, firm, rounded on the back, faintly 5–nerved, tapering into 2 slender apical teeth, dorsally awned or awnless, callus minute, obtuse wittr a short tuft of hairs; palea subequal to lemma, somewhat scabrous along keel and often scabrous between nerves. Stamens 3. Ovary superior.

Fruit: Caryopsis fusiform; slightly adherent to lemma.
